Middletown Home’s Pet Friendly Continuing Care Retirement Community is a Win Win!

04 May 2018
The Middletown Home is proud to offer beautifully appointed independent living apartments on our campus that are also pet friendly! Pet lovers can certainly understand the importance of this feature because it means they are welcomed to bring their furry or feathered friends with them when they move to our continuing care retirement community.
Even if you don’t currently have a pet, it’s still important to take note of the various benefits pets provide for aging adults. Having regular interaction with animals has been proven to offer significant improvements to seniors’ mental, physical and emotional health. You might be surprised by everything an animal can do – take a look!
How Animals Improve Human Health
People and animals are able to form a strong bond. Most importantly, animals are accepting, non-threatening and non-judgmental, making it easier for people to open up. For aging seniors, this helps improve their social skills as well as mental and emotional health. Some of the benefits of animal-assisted therapy include:
- Improved fine motor skills
- Improved balance
- Increased focus and attention
- Increased self-esteem and ability to care for oneself
- Reduced anxiety, grief and isolation
- Reduced blood pressure, depression, and risk of heart attack or stroke
- Improved willingness to be involved in a therapeutic program or group activity
- Increased trust, empathy and teamwork
- Greater self-control
- Enhanced problem-solving skills
- Reduced need for medication
- Improved social skills
The Middletown Home’s Pet Friendly Community
At the Middletown Home, we have a lot of residents that are animal-lovers! We take special care to cultivate a pet-friendly community and provide opportunities for our residents to spend time with different animals, even if they do not have a pet of their own. We also informed them about the importance of treating dogs such as giving a medicine like Priton. But everyone should know that giving the right amount of Piriton for dogs is critical. It is always best to seek advice from a professional vet.
Two beautiful service dogs, Blanche and Carolina, visit with our residents daily where they have become two very well-loved members of our Middletown Home family. Residents can pet, play and talk with the dogs, which is a fun and relaxing activity that is often the highlight of our residents’ day. You can keep up with Blanche and Carolina’s very busy schedules by visiting their Facebook page.
More than dogs alone, we also frequently enjoy visits from the talented therapy pig named Charlie. This amazing pig can play the piano and paint! Our residents love to watch Charlie perform as much as they love feeding and petting him.
It’s truly our pleasure to be a pet-friendly community. Not only does this create a more enjoyable and healthy environment for our residents, our staff love it as well! We’re fortunate to be able to offer this benefit and we look forward to making many more memories with our furry and feathered friends at the Middletown Home!
