Fun Spring Craft Ideas for Seniors

05 Mar 2018
Spring is the time of year when everything seems to come alive again! The flowers begin to bloom, grass and leaves grow and the birds start singing again. Spring is also the perfect time to make your home feel alive, and a great way to do that is to decorate it with some spring crafts.
For our seniors, we have quite a few spring crafts and activities we recommend. No matter your age or ability, here are some fun crafts you should try this season!
- Spring Wreath
A spring wreath is a beautiful way to spruce up your home for the season. The best part is that you can hang it anywhere in your home! Whether you are in a room, an apartment or a single family home, your wreath can go on any door or wall.
Start with a simple, plain wreath, which can be purchased or repurposed from almost anywhere. Next pick your decorations. You can weave silk flowers throughout the wreath or wrap it in a spring ribbon. You can even put faux Easter eggs or a small toy rabbit on the wreath if you wish to make it specific to Easter. The possibilities are endless! Make it as simple or decorative as you wish. Best of all, you can reuse it year after year.
- Pressed Flowers
Take a walk outside and collect small wild flowers. Next, arrange them nicely on a sheet of wax paper. Once lying flat, press the flowers between another sheet of wax paper using a heavy object like a book or doorstop. For best results, let the flowers press overnight.
Once completely flat, you can laminate the flowers into a book mark or use them with paper mache to cover any surface you wish to decorate. Pressed wild flowers are a perfect way to bring the spring season into your home!
- Picture Frame
Another fun and easy craft for seniors to do is decorating a picture frame. First purchase or repurpose a plain wooden picture frame. Then, use spring decorations like silk flowers, ribbon or beads to decorate the frame in spring colors. The most important piece is what goes inside the frame! Take a nature walk and snap some photos of things you find outside in spring. Better yet, take a photo of you and a loved one together and frame it so you can enjoy the lasting memory all season long.
- Spring Centerpiece
A spring centerpiece will brighten up your home and make it feel like spring! Use silk flowers, ribbon, strings of beads and/or small items like faux Easter eggs, toy chicks and bunnies to craft your own spring centerpiece. You can arrange the items around a candle or glass cylinder to use as the anchor piece.
Remember, you don’t necessarily have to place a centerpiece on dining table! A dresser, night stand or end table are also great places to enjoy your centerpiece. You might also consider making a second centerpiece to give to a friend to lift their spirits this spring!
- Garden Flag
A garden flag is actually a quite simple craft that is a beautiful addition to any home or garden! Start with a simple rectangle of fabric. If you intent to place it outdoors, be sure the fabric can withstand the weather. Fold down the top few inches and sew or glue the fabric to create an opening that you can place a flag holder or string to hang your flag. Next, decorate your flag with ribbon and embellishments. You can also use fabric pens to write a word or phrase on your flag that is meaningful to you.
Finally, place your garden flag anywhere around your home. An outdoor space is an obvious place for your garden flag, but if you don’t have an outdoor space, you can also hang it from a door or wall to showcase your craft!
