A Summer of Fun – On the Road Again!

19 Aug 2021
It’s hard to believe that the summer is coming to an end! We are so grateful to have enjoyed such a beautiful summer full of activities, trips, and family time for our residents. Here are just a few of our summer highlights:
Many of our residents have visited Hershey Park in their younger years, and quite a few of them have even worked for the Hershey Company as well! One of our residents enjoys sharing stories about when he would get to meet Milton Hershey himself! Our trip to Chocolate World was our first big trip we had to kick off this summer. The residents really enjoyed going on the ride and learning about the chocolate-making process. The workers there were kind enough to send us home with a huge bag of chocolates. What a great way to start the summer!
One of our residents’ favorite trips is going fishing! Our go to spot is at the Limestone Springs Fishing Preserve. We love going here because of their great service and wonderful deals for our veterans! They clean the fish on location so that we can take them home and they’re all ready to be fried up for dinner. Our residents are great fishers and we often come back with a fish story or two!
A summer staple at the Middletown Home is our Campfire Nights! The last Thursday of the summer months is dedicated to a fun-filled Campfire Night. There is always toe-tapping music and yummy smores! The residents look forward to spending the evening outside in the fresh air overlooking the corn fields. Some nights we get to wave to the airplanes flying overhead, or if we’re lucky, we get to see the deer running across the fields. It’s definitely a summer favorite!
Another trip we took this summer was to the Senators Baseball Game. A lot of our residents are dedicated baseball fans. They had a great time cheering on the Senators, eating hotdogs, and singing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” at the top of their lungs! Our therapy dog, Carolina, came along too. The residents love when our facility dogs get to join them for trips! We had so much fun!
We were very thankful to be able to host our Annual Father’s Day Car Show again this year. Our residents really look forward to this event and it was a joy to have it again! We had more cars than we expected which made for such a wonderful surprise. The day was filled with music, popcorn, snowcones, and admiring these incredible classic cars.
Something new that we got to do this year at the Middletown Home, was host a summer concert! If you’re local, then you have probably heard of the Pentagon Band. This year they are celebrating 50 years together! We were honored to have them play for us here at the Middletown Home. The community came to support both the home and this amazing band. Many people there could reminisce about the times they have seen the Pentagon Band perform when they were young. We were all happy to celebrate the 50 years that the Pentagon Band has been together. Lots of residents and their families came to enjoy this fun evening. Some of our residents were dancing along to the toe-tapping music!
Did you watch any of the Olympics this year? Our residents like to tune in to the different events on TV, but it’s even better when the Olympics come right here to the Middletown Home! We organized our very own Middletown Home Olympics and we all had so much fun. At the opening ceremony we sang the National Anthem and presented our Olympic torch. The main events were: Football Throw, Corn Hole, and Waterballoon Toss. The residents had so much fun completing against each other and cheering each other on! Later that evening we celebrated our winners and everyone who participated with ice cream and a medal ceremony. The winners each got a medal and a certificate to remember their win at the 2021 Middletown Home Olympic Games.
We still have some more fun in store for our residents before this summer comes to a close. But no matter the season, we are reminded of just how blessed we are to spend this time together and share smiles and laughs every day!
